This is a huge progressive leap for Madeira Island in establishing itself in the European open water swimming roadmap. In 2020 and 2021 the archipelago debuted with the Madeira Island Ultra Swim (MIUS), and will now see a significant upgrade with the Oceanman competition running alongside it. The Oceanman European Championship is planned to be held in Croatia after the Madeira stage on the 16th and 17th of September.
Over the course of two days, up to 1000 swimmers will have the opportunity to participate in races that range from 1.5k to 30k, with the finish line set in the beautiful city of Funchal. Famed for its beautiful shoreline and temperate waters – usually a model 24 ˚C in September – the location is ideal. During their leisure time swimmers will also be able to take advantage of the island’s fascinating nature reserves, with two-thirds of the archipelago under protection and covered in exotic vegetation.
Avelino Silva, president of the Madeira Swimming Association (ANM), says “through the connection to such a high standard international circuit as Oceanman, as well as building on our own prestigious MIUS event we are proud to showcase Madeira’s unique attributes for open water swimming and practice”.
With spaces already filling up fast, swimmers are encouraged to register now to avoid disappointment.
