Tourism recovery gains momentum as restrictions ease and confidence returns

The year of 2022 may be characterized as a year of weak growth, rather than a spin towards recession. High demand for domestic and intra-European travel will help keep the industry afloat and continue to drive tourism growth in the region in 2022, while transatlantic travel is showing encouraging signs. Recent studies show that 77% of Europeans intend to travel between April and September 2022, preferring Mediterranean destinations such as Spain, Italy or France.

Travel Industry Feedback

Due to the lack of competition on international flights, the cost of air tickets has increased from 30 to 55% compared to previous years, which has led to a sharp increase in prices for all travel packages.

According to the European Travel Commission, domestic travel is projected to make a complete recovery in 2022, while international travel is not expected to exceed 2019 levels until 2025. However, it would be a mistake to consider that this situation isn’t changeable and therefore it is a must to face challenges and drive towards this market to be fully ready when the stabilization occurs. The survey shows that after a tough year of the pandemic and ongoing economic crisis, tourists from the CEE will be eager to travel much more.

Airlines

Airlines based in Europe have shown the best results in any region of the world. Transportation between Europe and Asia increased by 9.6% month-on-month in February, despite the fact that some airlines abandoned routes between them. During the same period, traffic within Europe increased by more than 30%.

A very positive sign is that airline premium classes are currently being restored in line with economy class. This eliminates the serious concern of many airlines about the slower recovery of business travel.
