Minister of Tourism in Greece, Mrs Olga Kefalogianni on the BBC: “Tourists should continue to come to Corfu and Rhodes”.

Tourists should continue to travel to Corfu and Rhodes, said Tourism Minister Olga Kefalogianni, speaking to BBC Radio 4.

She emphasized that the situation in Corfu „is not alarming” and is in no way related to the scenes we saw in Rhodes.

„We had some evacuations of houses but nothing in relation to what happened in Rhodes” said Mrs. Kefalogianni, while saying that only a small part of the island has been affected.

„There is no problem at the airport and it is very important to emphasize that only a small part of the island of Rhodes has been affected,” said the minister.

In fact, he characterized as incorrect the estimates that 50% of the island has been affected by the fiery blaze.

„The percentage is between 10 and 20%,” he said characteristically.

Olga Kefalogianni also stated that the tourists stayed in conference centers and stadiums but also in the homes of locals, as the hotels do not have rooms.

He said he understands the tourists’ discomfort with the evacuation but „safety is a priority”.

„Indeed, it was the largest evacuation that has ever taken place in Greece within a few hours, but everyone is safe,” concluded Mrs. Kefalogianni.
