Designed by the company from Veneto for a currently unexplored segment of the market, the new shoe covers the needs of a growing category of bicycle and e-bicycle users. With a structure that’s stiff enough for efficient pedalling, but comfortable enough to walk in, the 9.81 HI-RIDE has even earned a prestigious 2023 Design & Innovation Award.
Garmont has a revolution in store for summer. The 9.81 HI-RIDE is designed for the new generation of cyclists, who love nature and exploring their surroundings wherever they may be, both on and off a bicycle. These new requirements spurred Garmont to develop a hybrid shoe, ideal for those who love cycling and then, hopping out of the saddle, touring around a city or exploring a short trail.
As confirmation of its great success in the world of two wheels, the 9.81 HI-RIDE has been given the 2023 Design & Innovation Award. The goal of this prestigious award is to identify the biggest upcoming trends, and the products that are destined to bring significant improvements to the market.
The challenge for the Veneto-based company was to create a sufficiently rigid shoe that wouldn’t disperse the force applied to the pedal and, at the same time, remain flexible and comfortable enough to walk in.
Garmont made this possible thanks to its innovative Garmont Traction Formula GTF Hyve two-zone outsole. One zone is made from a softer compound that, also thanks to the high-density honeycomb lugs, offers increased pedal grip, and the other is made from recycled rubber with larger, deeper lugs, to achieve the right compromise between grip, traction and durability.
An X-ray look into the hybrid shoes
Although the 9.81 HI-RIDE has what it takes for the cycling distribution channel, it also has all the technical and stylistic features that characterize Garmont hiking shoes, for the utmost product reliability.
One such feature is the brand’s Heel Lock technology, which secures the heel in place when laces are tightened by means of loops integrated into the lateral reinforcement in microfibre. Reflective accents have been added to the heel for greater visibility. The upper is in recycled, abrasion-resistant rip-stop nylon, while the lightweight protective panels and the heat-bonded TPU trim provide added protection.
The Ortholite insole is made out of 98% recycled materials, and the PlumeFoam midsole, made from a bio-based compound derived from sugarcane, provides enhanced cushioning and lightness. As mentioned above, the sole is the GTF Hyve (proprietary technology by Garmont) with honeycomb lugs, composed of different support zones depending on the movement of the foot during each activity. On the area used when pedalling, the lugs on the sole are smaller and brought closer together for total control of the pedal, guaranteed also by a compound that increases grip. The part of the sole used when walking, on the other hand, features a recycled rubber compound with lugs that are further apart and deeper.
The Garmont 9.81 HI-RIDE is available in black/yellow (unisex) and moss green/yellow colour palettes. The recommended retail price is 140.00 euros.
