Known colloquially as the “Bird Hotel”, the 152-hectare lagoon is home to over three thousand birds from 232 distinct species. The lagoon remains one of the key bird sanctuaries in Turkey with its ever-growing population, and it is situated on the migration routes of several species of birds. Hersek Lagoon is a summer breeding ground for migratory species and serves as a refuge for common tern, sandwich tern, Mediterranean gull, Caspian gull, oystercatcher and little ringed plover, which breed in colonies across the bank that separates the lagoon from the sea. The lagoon is categorized as an “important bird area” due to its sandwich tern population in particular, with more than 20 pairs nesting in the area. Hersek is also home to one of the largest flamingo populations in the region.
Hersek Lagoon is an important local cultural destination with an underwater ancient city, castle, külliye and lighthouse. It features a landscaping design that blends in with the natural environment, as well as Turkey’s first accessible observation tower and botanical garden.
