The Persian New Year (Nowruz)

Nowruz (Persian New Year) is a traditional Iranian festival that brings in a happy and prosperous new year while also welcoming Spring.

Haft Sin (Haft Seen) is a traditional custom in the Nowruz. Actually it is a table setting with 7 different items which its essential items letters start with S in Persian language, however there are some items in this table setting which do not start with (S in Persian language); in below please check the list of Haft Sin elements.

Actually every item in Haft seen is a symbol from Regeneracy, Fertility, Abundance, Wealth, etc. The common items and their mbolic definitions are as follow:

„Sib” (Apple): symbol of „Health”
„Sabze” (Grass): symbol of Greenery, Nature and Exhilaration
„Senjed” (Sea-buckthorn): symbol of wisdom and Regeneracy.
„Serkeh” (Vinegar): symbol for Surrendering and Satisfaction.
„Samanu”: (or Sumalak in Uzbek) symbol for Power and Bravery
„Somaq” (Sumac): symbol for Patience and Tolerance. and LifeStimulation.
„Seer” (Garlic): stimulation symbol
Some more elements without ‘S’ in Persian language;

  1. „Ayyeneh” (Mirror): It is a common item in Haft-Seens „not start with S in Persian” a symbol for Lighting.
  2. Goldfish, a symbol for Victory, Exhilaration, Blessing.
  3. Quran, Shahnameh or Hafez Poet Book, as Holy-books or respectful literature in Persian culture.
  4. Decorated Eggs
