The 2024 European Capital of Smart Tourism, Dublin, Celebrates „The Portal” – A Digital Bridge to New York City

Dublin’s journey as the European Capital of Smart Tourism 2024 has reached a significant milestone with "The Portal", a groundbreaking real-time digital connection between Dublin and New York City. This innovative project transcends geographical boundaries, fostering connections and interactions between locals and visitors in these two iconic cities.

A Visionary Project Connecting Cultures

„The Portal” features sculptures strategically placed in Dublin and New York, each equipped with a 24/7 visual livestream from its counterpart across the Atlantic. In Dublin, the sculpture is located in the heart of the city, capturing views of the GPO building and the Spire. In New York, the corresponding sculpture stands near the renowned Flatiron Building. This real-time visual bridge allows Dubliners, New Yorkers, and visitors to engage in spontaneous interactions, sharing moments and experiences as if they were in the same place.

In a series of vibrant cultural exchanges facilitated by „The Portal,” several dance groups, including traditional Irish and hip-hop, have organised activities. Spontaneous dance-offs have also taken place both in Dublin and New York City. Art groups and Pride organisations in both cities are discussing collaborative events. Notably, two marriage proposals, known as „ProPortals,” took place. The Canadian ambassador to Ireland held an event to honour the millions of Irish people who have left their homes for Canada and the US.

A Commitment to Inclusivity

Unveiled by the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Daithí De Róiste, the launch event featured a performance by the Liberties Majorettes, symbolising the vibrancy and cultural richness of Dublin. In his address, the Lord Mayor emphasised the project’s role in „bringing together technology, engineering, and art to bring communities from across the world closer together and to allow people to meet and connect outside of their social circles and cultures”.

Fostering Connections and Celebrating Achievements

As part of Dublin’s European Capital of Smart Tourism 2024 programme, „The Portal” is more than just an art installation; it is an invitation to explore new perspectives and form meaningful connections. By seamlessly integrating advanced technology with public spaces, „The Portal” not only fosters real-time interactions but also highlights Dublin’s commitment to enhancing tourism through cultural exchange and technological advancements.

A Giant Hashtag Sculpture to Celebrate Dublin as the European Capital of Smart Tourism 2024

On 30 April 2024, Dublin unveiled its giant hashtag sculpture in Capel Street. Winning cities not only gain access to a network of smart tourist destinations and support to promote the city across Europe but also receive an iconic sculpture to serve as a daily reminder for the citizens and tourists of the city’s great achievements. The sculpture serves as a visible reminder of how the city excels in the four categories: accessibility, sustainability, digitalisation, and cultural heritage and creativity.
