Ambassador Heinz Walker-Nederkoorn pronounced his traditional 1 August speech. He emphasized that Switzerland and the Netherlands are like-minded countries sharing strong business and cultural ties as well as common values such as human rights, democracy and rule of law.
Referring to the war in Ukraine, H.E. Ambassador Walker-Nederkoorn pointed out that peace and security on the European continent cannot be taken for granted in today’s world anymore. “No European country can cope with the challenges ahead of us alone, but together, we can overcome the attempt to undermine our business model, our common achievements and make Europe more resilient.”

A Swiss day would not be a Swiss day without the sound of alphorns and yodel. The alpine sound of Joseph AG from Groningen enchanted the audience and premises of the Floriade, just as much as the astonishing yodel performance by vocalist Martina Gabriela. The Swiss community living in the Netherlands via the network of Swiss clubs in the Netherlands | Neue Helvetische Gesellschaft, NHG joined the festivities from all corners of the country and shared a typical Raclette as well as Swiss wine with all visitors at the Raclette Bar.
The jazz quartet The Lipstick Killers, properly dressed in red and white for the occasion, rounded up the Swiss day with jazzy interpretations of Swiss classics such as Dr Schacher Seppli at the Urban stage.
Behind this idyllic backdrop and picture postcard scenery lies a country wholly committed to Cleantech.
That is why, Switzerland presents an exhibition asking “CAN TECH SAVE THE WORLD?” in the Greenhouse of the Floriade with 10 informative panels displaying innovative solutions “Made in Switzerland” to protect the environment. Visitors can discover concrete contributions by Swiss start-ups reinventing housing insulation, capturing C02 from the air or designing solar facades with style. The ongoing exhibition thereby echoes the theme of this year’s Floriade “Growing green cities”.
Furthermore, experts from Switzerland and the Netherlands came to Almere for the “Swiss-Dutch Dialogue on Sustainable Housing” on 6 July, organized in partnership with the Dutch Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. As challenges in housing policy – availability, affordability and sustainability – in Switzerland and the Netherlands are similar, this Dialogue promoted the exchange among policymakers, practitioners and investors on urban development approaches and instruments in both countries. The Embassy of Switzerland in the Netherlands wishes to express its sincere gratitude to the Floriade staff for this unique opportunity and exceptional location to bring together Swiss and Dutch innovation and tradition as well as experts, visitors and friends to exchange, learn and celebrate together again.
