5 ideas for a getaway that combines nature, culture, and indulgence

Bergisches Land: A road trip with no set schedule

Window down, face in the breeze, and relishing the feeling of freedom. Finn, Charly, and their dog, Kalle, are driving along the Panoramic Route through Bergisches Land in their electric camper. They pass meadows, forests, reservoirs, and rest stops along the way, stopping spontaneously wherever they please. At a farm, a brief stop turns into a conversation; the conversation leads to a new acquaintance and a tip that no GPS knows about. To top it off, they even receive some fresh eggs and treats in a mason jar. Staying the night where it’s beautiful and moving on in the morning.

Specific travel idea: Plan to spend two nights and combine the Panorama Route with a visit to a farm, an extended stop at the Bevertalsperre dam, and a detour to the Altenberg Cathedral. Pick up some local specialties along the way to enjoy at a picnic or for dinner.

Cologne: Cool cultural sites for hot days

Cologne can be loud, lively, and wonderfully chaotic in the summer. No matter how hectic things get, though, quiet corners and cool spots offer a break from the hustle and bustle. With that „Summer in the City” vibe, Miri and Pina set out to discover cool spots with pleasant atmospheres that are also cultural gems. A specially designed „Cool and Calm Cologne” map brings together places where culture and relaxation meet, so the friends don’t have to search long. Instead, they go with the flow, stopping for art, a break in a shady spot, or an ice cream with a view of the cathedral.

Good to know: Many of the stops are close to each other and within walking distance, and some are free to visit. Bringing a reusable water bottle and maintaining a relaxed itinerary will make this city tour especially hassle-free.

The Münsterland: A leisurely bike ride from palace to castle

Sandra and Ginger hop on their bikes and make sure not to let the scenery pass them by. They make the most of the Münsterland region and are rewarded with every kilometer. The tour takes them from castle to castle, leading them to small shops selling regional products and cozy accommodations along the way. A picnic blanket, fresh bread, cheese, and locally grown fruits and vegetables treat them to a special moment of indulgence against a Baroque backdrop.

Concrete Travel Idea: The 100 Castles Route is perfect for cycling enthusiasts who love historic buildings. Spanning more than 1,000 kilometers, this route connects around 100 castles, fortresses, manor houses, and moated estates in the Münsterland region via a well-marked trail. Be sure to pack a picnic blanket, buy provisions at roadside farm stands, and plan for at least two overnight stays.

Bielefeld: Extend your stay after your meeting

A business trip doesn’t have to end with your last meeting. In Bielefeld, city life and nature, work and relaxation are so close together that you can begin a relaxing vacation right after your meeting ends. A quick detour through the botanical garden can turn into a hike through the Teutoburg Forest. A trip to Sparrenburg Castle reveals views of other trails and destinations.

Our tip for you: The Explorer Card is your key to exploring the city. It’s valid on buses, light rail, and commuter trains throughout the city of Bielefeld and grants you free admission to nine museums. The card also includes certain city tours, as well as admission to the tower and casemates of Sparrenburg Castle.

Lower Rhine: Rent, ride, relax

The Lower Rhine is perfect for cycling vacations of every kind: The Lower Rhine Route, stretching over 2,000 kilometers, offers plenty of opportunities for new detours along the way. Lukasz cycles through floodplains, meadows, and fields; over dikes; and along tree-lined paths, going wherever the mood strikes him. He always follows his nose, stopping wherever the scent of fresh coffee and homemade cake wafts over from a farm café.

A fixed plan would only get in the way here. Green rental bikes from NiederrheinRad can be easily reserved via an app and picked up and returned at different stations. So, Lukasz doesn’t decide how far he’ll go on his tour while sitting at the breakfast table in the morning, but rather, he decides along the way depending on the weather, his mood, and the next turn.

Concrete travel idea: Start with a general direction rather than a specific distance goal. The floodplain landscapes of Bislicher Island and the charming towns of Kalkar and Xanten are definitely worth seeing.

Short trips that leave a lasting impression

These five examples are all different—a road trip, a cultural stroll, a leisurely bike ride, a “bleisure” getaway, and a spontaneous bike tour. What they have in common is a simple decision: to take your time. When you stay an extra night, explore on foot or by bike, and shop locally, you experience a place as more than just a backdrop. The journey gains depth through conversations, breaks, and small discoveries that can’t be planned.
