Shocking hand luggage restrictions revealed

Holidaymakers planning to jet off over the festive season have been warned of surprising liquid restrictions.

Travel experts warn that although liquid limits are due to be scrapped
in 2024 current rules still apply meaning items including snow globes
and mascara could be confiscated by security.

Shocking hand luggage restrictions revealed

Passengers have been warned that airport liquid restrictions could see
unexpected items confiscated at security.

Travel experts at FlightsFinder.com [1] have revealed the six surprising
items which could leave passengers in trouble if they fail to put them
in a plastic liquid bag.

Among them are make-up items and snow globes, but also food items
including marmite and soft cheeses.

Liquid limits are due to be scrapped in 2024 but until they are, current
rules still apply in most UK airports.

Changes will be gradual as new security technology is installed
nationwide, and at present, only a handful of UK airports are without a
100ml rule.

More should adopt the standard by the government deadline of June 1,
2024, but until then anything which breaches liquid regulations will be
confiscated.

Shahab Siddiqui, founder of FlightsFinder.com [1] said: “The
government has set a deadline of June 2024 to axe the liquid
restrictions, but we are yet to hear of any official guidelines or laws.

“Travellers are eagerly awaiting the nationwide scrapping of the 100ml
liquid rule. There is nothing worse than getting essentials confiscated
by security staff.

“For now, the majority of airports in the UK still have strict liquid
regulations, which means items including mascara and even marmite must
fit liquid regulations.

“Those travelling over the festive season will be surprised to know
that snow globes must follow airport liquid rules.”

Surprising items that count as a liquid

* Makeup

The Department of Transport states that creams, lotions, oils, perfumes,
mascara and lip gloss need to go into the liquid bag, as well as any
products with a similar consistency. Mascara, lip gels and liquid
eyeliner are the three most commonly restricted make-up items.

* Snow Globes

Snow Globes which contain liquid must follow the 100ml rule and fit in
the bag. Avoid travelling with them in hand luggage as they rarely have
a label which says how much liquid is inside which means they could be
confiscated.

* Marmite

The consistency of spreads like marmite and jam means it is considered a
liquid and standard laws, even if sealed, break the 100ml rule. This
should be taken in checked baggage.

* Brie

Creamy and soft cheeses, like brie, camembert and goats cheese, are
considered liquids so must stick to the required restrictions. To avoid
stinking the plane out and getting it confiscated, leave it in the
checked luggage.

* Freezer packs

Melted or partially slushy ice packs will be considered a liquid and
must stick to the rules 100ml, or 3.4 ounces rule. Those that are
completely frozen are good to go.

* Alcohol

Passengers travelling with just hand luggage can take alcohol on board,
but it must be in a bottle under 100ml and fit in the 20cm x 20cm bag.
Larger bottles can be taken onboard, but only if they have been
purchased in duty-free.
