Saxony-Anhalt as a travel destination for the cold season: winter fun and world culture

Saxony-Anhalt is introducing new offers, ideas and inspiration for special winter vacations with the theme of “THE BEST of Saxony-Anhalt”. The state is the perfect destination for winter visitors.

Its central location in the triangle between Berlin, Hamburg and Hanover, its excellent rail and intercity bus connections and its easy access by car make this dynamic region ideal for short breaks for couples or whole families. The new offers and inspirational ideas in Saxony-Anhalt combine world culture with unspoiled countryside and vibrant cities with peaceful oases in a way that is quite unlike any other area of Germany. The region also offers very good value for money.

Dr. Robert Franke, Managing Director of the Investment and Marketing Corporation Saxony-Anhalt (IMG), highlights the outstanding quality and services on offer from THE BEST of Saxony-Anhalt: “The five vacation regions between the Harz Mountains and the River Elbe, together with the cities of Magdeburg, Dessau-Roßlau and Halle (Saale), offer unforgettable experiences this winter. THE BEST of Saxony-Anhalt is a carefully selected range of offerings that have been lovingly put together. The experiences, some of which can be booked, and the inspirational routes provide amazing variety during even the shortest visit.”

A couples break in the magical Harz region

THE BEST of Saxony-Anhalt begins in the Harz – the most popular and highest earning travel region in Saxony-Anhalt. The romantic short route through the Harz leads from Wernigerode to the World Heritage town of Quedlinburg, for example. The Collegiate Church of St. Servatius on Castle Hill, which has been fully renovated, can now be visited in all its historic glory. Also on the agenda is, of course, a visit to the Quedlinburg cathedral treasury. Another hidden gem is the unique Lyonel Feininger museum. Other options for visitors include the Ruebeland caves with their stalactites and stalagmites, plus a detour to the nearby Bodetal thermal spa in Thale. A ride on the Harz narrow gauge railway up to Schierke on a train pulled by a roaring steam locomotive adds the perfect finishing touch to a couples break in the region.

A fairy tale in the peaceful Altmark region

Four treasures of the Altmark region in the north of Saxony-Anhalt will give families a magical vacation. This special tour of discovery passes through Tangermünde, Stendal, Gardelegen and Salzwedel with their enchanting old towns, winding alleyways and mysterious squares and promises relaxing strolls, exciting stories and regional delicacies that parents and children alike will enjoy. Obviously, it includes a chance to sample the famous Salzwedel Baumkuchen or tree cake and a visit to the Bismarck’s Christmas world at Döbbelin Castle, where it is Christmas all year round.

City. Countryside. River.

The Magdeburg vacation region of Mittelelbe opens up broad horizons with a tour of the city and the countryside along the banks of the river. A long weekend spent in and around Magdeburg is the perfect short break that combines the cultural highlights of the regional capital with spectacular activities in the surrounding countryside – from a peaceful stroll through Magdeburg’s historic cathedral or a winter horse-drawn carriage ride at Altenhausen Castle to the chance to race round the track at Oschersleben Motorsport Arena.

Bauhaus through and through

In 1919, Walter Gropius founded the „Staatliches Bauhaus“ in Weimar. Six years later in 1925, the school of art and architecture moved to its most productive location in Dessau. In addition to the Bauhaus building itself and the Masters’ Houses, the city commissioned the director Walter Gropius and later his successor Hannes Meyer to design and construct a number of public buildings. These included the Employment Office, the first of its kind in Germany, the Toerten housing estate, the Houses with Balcony Access and the Kornhaus restaurant. Dessau is the only place where almost all of the Bauhaus buildings were created that today are considered icons of 20th century architecture. The special winter tour, which is available for booking, visits all these locations and also the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz, which still retains its magic in the winter.

Family vacations in the World Heritage region

A visit to Lutherstadt Wittenberg can be added to the Dessau tour. The World Heritage family card offers discounts on experiences such as a visit to the panoramic artwork by Yadegar Asisi entitled “Luther 1517,” an audio guide, a map of the town for children and the escape game for the whole family with the exciting name of “Crime scene 1522” (Tatort 1522). Wörlitz Park, Oranienbaum and the Bauhaus city of Dessau-Roßlau are all only a few minutes’ drive from Wittenberg. UNESCO World Heritage sites at every turn – with plenty of time to look.

In love with Halle: The joy of winter on the River Saale

The high point of this inspirational visit to Handel’s city is a guided tour up to the top of the Hausmannstuerme, which are two of four towers of the Market Church. The panoramic view from the top is breathtaking. Enjoyment is the central feature of this short break, with carefully selected hotels, delicious food and world-class cultural experiences. The highlights include a visit to the State Museum of Prehistory to see the Nebra Sky Disc, which is part of the UNESCO Memory of the World, and to the Art Museum Moritzburg with its iconic modernist paintings and sculptures. Couples who are also music lovers will find musical entertainment in the legendary Handel House and in the Beatles Museum.

Splendor and wine – winter on the Saale and Unstrut rivers

This exhilarating tour focuses on the magic of the moment – the sight of Uta von Ballenstedt in Naumburg cathedral, the scent of the mulled wine in Naumburg marketplace and the bubbles in the sparkling wine at the Rotkäppchen winery in Freyburg. The region along the Saale and Unstrut rivers is characterized by an abundance of world-class architecture, living traditions and delicious food and drink. Anyone who enjoys cycling or walking in winter will love the paths through the vineyards. Afterward it’s good to go inside and warm up, perhaps with a delicious piece of Stollen, a cake that was invented in Naumburg.
