News from Iceland: Trade events, new resorts, flights to North Iceland, and more news…

2023 is a new year of opportunities and adventures in Iceland. Start the year with Visit Iceland to discover new flights, accommodations, and extraordinary experiences.

Travel trade events are off to a solid start in 2023. On January 18th-23rd Visit Iceland will be attending FITUR in Madrid with 11 Icelandic tourism companies. From January 20th-22nd we’ll be partaking in Matka in Helsinki with 6 Icelandic companies.

On February 7th, Visit Iceland hosts the annual five countries workshop in London, in which 14 Icelandic companies and two regional marketing offices will participate. We encourage UK travel trade buyers to sign up for the workshop and RSVP to: 5CountryWorkshop@finnpartners.com. Finally, from March 29th-April 1st, Visit Iceland is participating in ITB Berlin, along with 29 Icelandic tourism companies and one regional marketing office.

Blábjörg Resort

Blábjörg Resort is located in the scenic fishing village of Bakkagerði in Borgarfjörður eystri. Surrounded by mountains and rugged nature, Blábjörg Resort is an all-season hub for hiking, biking, and outdoor activities. Nine new deluxe hotel rooms with renovated outdoor hot tubs opened in 2022. A spa with seaweed, beer baths, and more amenities will open in early 2023.

Aurora Basecamp

Just outside Reykjavík stands three geodesic domes in stark contrast to the barren lava field. The three domes are part of Aurora Basecamp, a Northern Lights observatory. Outside of the city lights, the Aurora Basecamp is a cozy and educational way to learn more about the Northern Lights phenomenon while increasing your chances of seeing them. Find out more

Edelweiss flies to Akureyri IN summer 2023

Swiss airline Edelweiss is flying direct to Akureyri for the first time. From June 7th to August 18th, 2023, Edelweiss will fly once a week, on Friday evening, from Zürich to Akureyri, with a return flight on Saturday morning. Travelers from Zürich can book flights to Akureyri, and travelers in the North of Iceland can book flights to Zürich.

Biking IN THE Westfjords

Iceland’s Westfjords is attracting cyclists from around the world—and locals. The region’s stunning fjords and mountain scenery, plus the mix of asphalt and gravel roads, is appealing for bikers. The organized Westfjords Way is a 1,100-kilometer (683-mile) loop around one of the most remote regions in Iceland. The route can be self-guided or done with a local guide with various levels of accommodations. Find out more

Hotel Basalt

Hotel Basalt is a newly opened family-run hotel in Borgarfjörður, West Iceland. This charming countryside hotel has 13 rooms, a large 12-person hot tub, and a restaurant. Hotel Basalt is an ideal jumping-off point for visiting Iceland’s second-largest glacier, Langjökull, and the caves, hot springs, and hiking opportunities around Húsafell.

Looks Like you Need to Let it out a winner

On December 6th, 2022, Business Iceland’s marketing campaign Looks Like you Need to Let it Out won a Global Effie award for Transportation, Travel & Tourism category. Effie Awards recognize the best of the best by marketing professionals to spotlight ideas that work and encourage thoughtful dialogue about marketing effectiveness. 

The campaign started on July 15th, 2020 and invited travelers Covid-grounded at home to connect with Iceland by screaming. The screams were then streamed via the internet to big „let it out” speakers in Icelandic nature. Read more

Iceland Parliament hotel

The Iceland Parliament Hotel is part of Hilton’s Curio Collection. It is located in the city center, next to the Icelandic Parliament and across from Austurvollur Square. Conveniently located to the Reykjavik Cathedral, Harpa Concert Hall, and Reykjavík City Hall are within an easy walk. The Parliament Hotel has a new first-class restaurant, spa facilities, and conference and event space.

THE light house Trail

The South Coast Lighthouse Trail is slightly off the beaten track but close to the Keflavik Airport for convenience. The route takes visitors along the coast not far from the Golden Circle. Each stop along the way is unique and connected to the riches of the sea.The route is about 45–49 km (28–30 miles) and goes from Selvogur Cove to the Knarrarósviti lighthouse.

Iceland IN THE news

In November, Travel + Leisure published a comprehensive guide to packing for a trip to Iceland so that travelers will comfortably enjoy the variable weather one can experience in Iceland. Furthermore, writer Kimberly Wilson shared her helpful Iceland travel tips in an article in Essence. Journalist Cécile Legrand traveled to East Iceland and made a strong case for visiting the remarkable sights of East Iceland in La Voix du Nord. 

Saveur shared a steak tartar recipe from Chef Gunnar Karl Gíslason of Tides restaurant in Reykjavik. The piece highlights how Chef Gunnar revamps the French classic steak tartar with one surprising ingredient: Icelandic sourdough rye bread. Yonder covered The Greenhouse, a hotel, food hall, and retail concept in Hveragerði, south Iceland that opened in 2021 with a strong focus on design and sustainability.
