ISA Recommends Athletes Wear Protective Headwear for Surfing in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games

Ahead of the upcoming Paris 2024 Olympic Games, the International Surfing Association (ISA) is recommending that athletes competing in surfing wear protective headwear when they ride the wave at Teahupo’o in Tahiti.

The recommendation comes following consultations with the ISA’s Athletes and Medical Commissions.

Teahupo’o, Tahiti, is a reef break that creates unique surfing conditions. Pacific Ocean swells push straight onto the shallow reef, creating the awe-inspiring barrel-rides that have captured the world’s imagination.

The wave at Teahupo’o has staged numerous international surfing events over many years and is revered by surfers globally. As is the case for most action sports held in the open natural environment, the waves also carry an element of risk for athletes.

Specially designed headwear offers significant protection against injury, reducing the risk involved. While helmets will not be mandatory, and therefore a personal decision for each individual surfer, the ISA is promoting their use to ensure the well-being and safety of the athletes.

ISA President, Fernando Aguerre, said:

“The incredible waves of Teahupo’o are one of the great wonders of the world. We are so excited to present this awesome venue to billions of people around the world through the Olympic Games. The health and safety of the athletes is our highest priority, and as an organization, we highly recommend the surfers utilize protective headwear.”
