This morning, we published our Traffic Data for December, and thereby for the year 2022, in the Stock Exchange. 2022 was a year of a ramp-up and the number of passengers and our capacity increased significantly during the year. In total, we transported 3.7 million passengers, 150% more than in 2021. In December our capacity was 91% of 2019 numbers. This shows how rapidly our team has managed to ramp-up our operations.
Our domestic network has recovered well and Loftleidir as well with projects all over the world. Our charter projects are an important factor in reducing the seasonality of our operation, utilizing both aircraft and crews in the off-peak months. A major milestone was reached at the end of the year when Icelandair Cargo received a Boeing 767 wide-body into the freight fleet. In air freight and logistics, we are placing increased emphasis on using Keflavik Airport as a hub for air cargo between continents, similar to what we have successfully done for decades in our passenger network. This will create new and exciting opportunities for importers and exporters in Iceland.
In December 2022, the total number of passengers was 233,500, compared to 168,500 in December 2021. Passengers on international flights were 214 thousand compared to 149 thousand in December 2021. The number of passengers to Iceland was 79 thousand and from Iceland around 50 thousand. Via passengers were 85 thousand. On time performance on international flights was 62.4%. Load factor on international flights was 73%, compared to 71% in December 2021. On time performance, load factor and the overall operation was significantly affected by disruptions caused by extreme weather in Iceland in December.
The number of passengers on domestic flights was 20 thousand, compared to 19 thousand in December 2021. On time performance was 81% despite significant weather disruptions during the month. The load factor on domestic flights was 73% compared to 70% in December 2021.
Sold block hours in charter flights increased by 13%. Freight measured in Freight Ton Kilometers was around the same as in December 2021.
We are very proud of the Icelandair team and especially of how you managed, under very challenging conditions, to ensure that the vast majority of our 24,000 passengers who’s travel plans were disrupted because of weather, reached their destinations before the Holidays. Disruptions like these have a great impact on our customers, tourists’ experience of the country, and Iceland’s connectivity to the rest of the world. Reykjanesbraut, the route from the airport to the city, is a very important lifeline for Iceland, and we therefore put great emphasis on that the Icelandic government prevents similar situations from occurring again.
Best regards,
Bogi
