Spring Awaking – Easter Concerts
Once again this year, the Berlin Residence Orchestra is pleased to present a festive and elegant Easter concert in the Great Orangery of Charlottenburg Palace. Easter, the ultimate celebration of life, has moved generations of composers to create inspired works.
Musical director Alexandra Rossman has chosen a selection of sensitive, devotional, and celebratory pieces from the pens of G.B. Pergolesi, J.S. Bach and G.F. Handel.
Celebrate the spring with an exquisite gala dinner followed by a classic concert at one of the most beautiful locations in the capital city.

A melodious Easter tour of the „Musicians’ Cemetery” in Berlin Mitte
A number of important musicians are buried in the Sophiengemeinde cemetery on Invalidenstraße. The graves of the composers Walter Kollo and Albert Lortzing and the royal music director Adolf Zander can be found there, as can that of the piano maker Carl Bechstein and, last but not least, the grave of Bach’s last grandson, Wilhelm Bach.
During the tour of the cemetery the stories of the cemetery that was badly damaged by the building of the Wall and the graves are presented.

Day trip to the Easter fountains
The tradition of decorating Easter fountains originated in Franconian Switzerland and is unique in Bavaria. For more than a hundred years, numerous fountains and springs have been colorfully decorated every year at Easter time. In about 200 places in Franconian Switzerland, fountains are decorated with thousands of brightly painted eggshells, flowers, wreaths and garlands during Holy Week until two weeks after Easter. The origin of the custom lies primarily in the importance of water as a life-giving element for the water-poor plateau of the Franconian Alb. The world’s largest Easter fountain is located in Bieberbach near Egloffstein. It has made it into the Guinness Book of Records with exactly 11,108 lovingly hand-painted eggshells! https://www.discover-bavaria.com/destinations/easter-fountain-franconia
Tradition of Easter graves
Easter graves used to exist in almost every church in the Alpine country. They were a kind of bible for all those who could not read or understand the Latin mass. With the help of several backdrops, the events surrounding Jesus’ death were depicted pictorially in the chancel. During Holy Week, the elaborate Easter tombs are still set up in some churches in Bavaria and Tyrol, offering the faithful a place to marvel and pause: Mechanical apparatuses allow the scene to change before the eyes of the assembled congregation. Jesus’ journey from the cross to the burial cave to the resurrection can be followed during the liturgy as if on a stage. The artistic coloured glass balls that bathe the tomb in colored light create a particularly impressive atmosphere and are symbolic of the mystery of death and resurrection. The largest Easter tomb in Tyrol can be admired, for example, in the Franciscan monastery in Schwaz. https://www.alpbachtal.at/en/news/more-events-alpbachtal/Easter-tomb-watch_ed_1996108
Classical music at Easter
As part of Bavaria Klassik, various classical concerts will be held for Easter 2022 – in the state rooms of the Residenz in a royal ambience – where Bavarian rulers once had musical legends perform. Experience festive concerts in Nymphenburg Palace, where Mozart gave concerts as a child, or in the Cuvilliès Theater, where he premiered his Idomeneo. Special concerts will be heard in the Hofkapelle. https://www.bavaria-klassik.de/en/concert-series/easter-concerts/
