In addition, faster-than-expected demand for travel across Europe has caught airports by surprise, leading to staff shortages. But still the Europeans’ concern over the economic situation and their personal finances is not statistically significant compared to previous season.
- Travel sentiment remains strong, with73% of surveyed Europeans planning to travel in the next 6 months, out of which 60% intend to travel more than once.
- 84%of travelers intend to make a trip in August-September, when there is a high interest in visiting Mediterranean destinations.
- The war in Ukraine did not affect the holiday plans of44%of Europeans, while it caused 31% to make some changes to their original plans, and 4% cancelled their trip completely.

Europeans’ travel sentiment climbs to new heights, with 3 in 4 Europeans planning to travel by September 2022. Furthermore, leisure travel reaches its highest level (76%) since August 2020
According to the European Travel Commission, for the first time since August 2020, vaccination against COVID-19 is no longer the main means of increasing confidence in travel, it has been replaced by flexible cancellation rules and completely lifted travel restrictions. Taking into account the summer holidays, 70% of Europeans will go on a trip in the period from summer to early autumn 2022; intra-European tourism is the preferred choice for 56% of them.
- The sun and the beach (22%), Nature and Outdoor recreation (15%) and City Break (15%) are the most preferred types of recreation for Europeans in thesummer of 2022.
- 47%of European travellers will take a plane to their next holiday destination, while 38% will drive.
Airports in the EU market saw by far the biggest jump in passenger traffic at +348.9% – resulting in their passenger volume increasing to 635 million from 140 million compared to last year.
Airports in Ireland (+1125%), the UK (+833%), Slovakia (+842.2%), Hungary (+784.8%) and Denmark (+611.8%) all experienced extraordinary increases.
In June 2022, passenger traffic across the entire European airport network continued to grow – the month closed at -17.4% compared to the level before the pandemic (June 2019). This is the highest monthly figure since the last report on the pre-pandemic period in February 2020.
