Canary in a coal mine

Like canaries in a cage, carried into the dark by miners of old as a warning of toxic gases, coral reef ecosystems are a dynamic indicator of the rapid changes happening at the frontline of marine conservation.

Dr Tessa Hempson gives a first-hand account: “Reefs disappeared in front of my eyes, over a timescale of a few years”.

These habitats not only support myriad marine life and underpin the health of our oceans, but they also impact local livelihoods, food security, tourism and every aspect of the Blue Economy.

Corals of opportunity

Coral reef restoration promises a lifeline for these threatened ecosystems, and a new project is taking shape right now, led by our Mnemba Island Oceans Without Borders’ Community and Conservation team.
