Enjoy 360° variety while on holiday
Once you arrive in Innsbruck the first thing to do is to explore the historic old town. No one should miss the “obligatory” five sights: the Golden Roof built by Emperor Maximilian I; the Nordkettenbahnen cable railways, which offers a zooming up from the city to the Alpine peaks; the Bergisel ski jump, which is the Innsbruck landmark for sports and architecture fans; the Court Church and the fairytale Ambras Castle. One of the city’s highlights is LUMAGICA Innsbruck, the magical light park in the Imperial Gardens, where visitors can experience a journey through all five continents on a 1.5-kilometre path amid colourful, interactive light displays.
Skiing and snowboarding: the classics
What would a winter holiday be without fun on the slopes? Skiers and snowboarders have plenty of choice in the Innsbruck region, because here and in the neighbouring Stubaital Valley there are 13 ski areas, each offering something for every taste. Freeriders can go wild in the Axamer Lizum with its 300 hectares of open ground, while the Muttereralm ski area is aimed primarily at families with children. With its 35 runs, the Stubai Glacier is ideal for high-mileage skiers and those who want to continue skiing into the spring, while the especially adventurous can try out a special form of the so-called “figln”: on short skis of some 50 to 60 centimetres in length – known as Firngleiter – you venture in spring-like conditions across the remaining snowfields on the Nordkette range.
From chill outdoors to a concert hall
Tobogganing is always a great experience – and fun for all the family. Enthusiasts will be delighted by the winter sports resort of Kühtai in the Innsbruck region. At over 2,000 metres above sea level, with snow guaranteed, you can find the highest toboggan run in all Tyrol. One of its special features is that the ascent and descent are separate from one another, so that you can enjoy the magnificent winter views on the 45-minute journey upwards. Apart from tobogganing and skiing, the guided winter activity programme also allows guests to try out a new outdoor activity, cross-country skiing. Time spent in the snow is followed by the chance to relax on the sun terrace of one of Kühtai’s mountain restaurants. And after that another highlight awaits you back in the city: the Tyrolean Symphony Orchestra. The programme is very varied From Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to Richard Strauss.
Winter walks and inspiration on ice
Hikers can enjoy Innsbruck’s mountain world to the full. The programme includes a free winter hike accompanied by a certified guide, who will take you directly from Innsbruck’s old town and into the forests at the foot of the imposing Nordkette range. And, as a winter holiday in the Innsbruck region is all about experiencing new sports, you can practise a few pirouettes on the beautifully prepared ice rink at Telfs. For those who can’t get enough winter fun in the snow, we recommend a guided alpaca hike around Oberperfuss!
